According to Nathaniel Branden “the first step toward change is awareness.” The Foundation for Rural Development engaged the communities of TA Chimutu, Tsabango, and Chitukula through awareness campaigns in the quest to eradicate the existing gender based violence’s being perpetrated in these areas. These activities, through the Arms of Liberty Project funded by UN Women under the Women Peace Humanitarian and Spotlight Initiative aimed at raising awareness on the dangers of VAWG, promoting recognition and contribution of women to the development of the impact area and how the community can report various forms of violence that are being perpetrated in their communities.
Building from the coordination and good relationship among the implementing partners, namely the local leaders, CBO’s, VSU personnel the Foundation for Rural Development has conducted 8 awareness campaigns and has reached out to total of 21,773 direct and indirect beneficiaries in the impact areas of the Arms of Liberty.
The awareness campaigns have contributed to an increase in the number of cases reported at community level from September to date. A total number of 209 cases have been reported to the respective CMCs working in the project area and others from the neighboring TA’s. Of these cases 145 were reported by women and girls, 22 were physical violence cases, 36 economic violence cases, 29 emotional violence cases and 57 sexual violence cases. Men reported 57 cases, 11 were sexual violence cases, 9 economic violence cases, 16 emotional violence cases and 20 physical violence.
In an efforts to reach out to more communities, Foundation for Rural Development has enhanced its collaboration with cooperating partners from government institutions like Ministry of Gender, Children, Disability, Social Welfare as well as the Lilongwe District Council. This partnership is aimed at holding joint awareness activities in neighboring TA’s in Lilongwe in order to reach out to 1500 beneficiaries and more community members. These activities were conducted during the International Women’s Day and 16 Days of Activism.
